Case Study 1
Insulation - Solar R in ‘Sky’ blue
Karen and Richard McCartney of Exeter had built a conservatory in the spring of 2003 and endured one of the hottest summers for many a year. This sweltering heat resulted in several mature plants in their new conservatory dying. Vowing never to let that happen again, they made the wise decision to install conservatory blinds,
"We were horrified at how fierce the heat can get in a conservatory and weren’t at all comfortable in it that summer," Mrs McCartney said. After a bit of research, they selected Appeal as their conservatory blind supplier of choice.
"The colour range and fabric choices offered by Appeal was far greater than the other company we looked at. It meant we could have everything we wanted from one company," Mr McCartney added.
With the help of our design consultants conveniently based in Exeter, the McCartneys opted for our Solar R roller blind range in our cool and refreshing ‘Sky’ shade for roof blinds and matching window blinds.
"The following summers, although not as hot as 2003, were nevertheless considerably enhanced with the heat control offered by the new blinds, When the temperature cooled, we would roll the blinds up and the conservatory would heat up nicely. It really extended our living space and allowed us to enjoy the ‘outdoors’ - even on chilly days and evenings."

Glare - pinoleum in Devon Fudge
The Flowers of Nottingham had a conservatory that extended their living space and let them enjoy their garden even on cool evenings. Unfortunately, on bright days, they found that their beautiful conservatory was virtually unusable.
"We thought that Appeal Conservatory Blinds would provide the answer as they had such a good range of all the fabric types and colours," Alan Flower told us. "We chose the Original French Pinoleum blinds range and felt the Devon Fudge colour would give a natural look at the same time as reducing the sun’s glare.
The Flowers made their selection from our brochure and had it confirmed as the best choice for them when our design consultant called with some colour and fabric samples.
"Once we made the decision and agreed the price, it all happened very quickly with the conservatory blinds installed and functional within the next few weeks. We have been enjoying the soft, dappled light and sophisticated look of our pinoleum blinds ever since."

Choice - pleated in a subtle green
Choice can sometimes have its disadvantages as the Jacksons of County Durham found out when they discovered our brochure.
"Friends of ours recently had Appeal Conservatory Blinds fitted and recommended the company to us when we moved into our new home,” Alan Jackson told us. “The previous owners had taken the blinds out of the existing conservatory when they left, so we wanted to redecorate it to our style."
Unfortunately, Alan and Cynthia Jackson just couldn’t make up their minds as to which fabric, let alone which colour to choose from in our range.
"The Appeal Conservatory Blinds brochure made it very clear that a free consultancy was part of the service so we decided to see if it would help if an Appeal Design Consultant came around and helped us."
Nearest to the Jacksons was one of our more experienced design consultants, Rebecca, who promptly arranged an appointment and turned up at the Jacksons with several swatches of samples. Rebecca told us afterwards that she spent a very pleasant 4 hours going through every combination of colours and fabric until the Jacksons were convinced of a soft shade of green from a choice of 240 colours for the pleated blinds. She then drew up a concept drawing which showed the colour, exact number and positioning of the blinds and the Jacksons went ahead with the plan.
"If it wasn’t for Rebecca, we would probably still be trying to make up our minds now. We were totally confident about our choice before we went ahead and we haven’t regretted any aspect of it since."

Operating mechanism - pleated in ‘Sand’
Geoff and Joan Battersby are an elderly couple and readily admit that they are not as mobile as they used to be. Geoff, in particular spends many hours in their conservatory overlooking their beautiful garden in a rural village in Berkshire but wanted conservatory blinds to lessen the heat of summer and keep the room warm and private in winter. However, the couple agreed that they didn’t want the inconvenience of having to get up and lower the blinds manually all the time, so agreed on a motorised system.
"We saw that Appeal Conservatory Blinds come with motorised options which would give us a very flexible choice." Joan said. "We agreed that the roof blinds should be independently motorised on each side, but the window blinds need only have a pull cord operation. The Appeal Designer lady said they could do that for us, so we agreed the fabric, colours and price and went ahead with their plan."
We subsequently designed and installed a lovely pleated conservatory blind system in a gentle ‘Sand’ colour throughout the conservatory – with independently-operated, motorised roof panels. We use motors from Somfy, the world leader in specialist power units for blinds. We installed a discreet, quiet Somfy motor on each of the eight roof panels (four on each side) and supplied the Battersbys with the remote control units and wall-mounted switch to operate them in comfort.
Geoff and Joan were assured that each Somfy motor has been stringently-tested for optimum performance year after year and the low voltage wiring means they can be safely used even with small grandchildren coming to visit.
